Developed in the US during the late 1800s by founder Dr Andrew T. Still, Osteopathy is a form of ‘hands on’ manual therapy which focuses on the musculoskeletal system (bones, muscles, joints). Guided by a set of principles, Osteopathy looks to promote your own self-healing processes leading to restoration of your body’s optimal form and function – allowing you get back to doing the things you love.
Osteopathy may help with a variety of conditions including:
During your first consult, you can expect your Osteopath to take you through a thorough case history, where you will be asked a series of questions regarding your medical history (including past injuries, family history, trauma etc). The second stage of the consult involves a physical assessment. This is where your Osteopath will look at your posture, take you through some movements, and conduct specific orthopaedic tests. This assessment will form the basis of your individualised treatment plan. The treatment involves specific ‘hands on’ techniques that are aimed to release tension, tightness and pain from your body. You may also be provided with lifestyle advice, shown stretches and/or exercises to help reclaim your health independence.
